Indian entrepreneur Kunal Shah has taken on one of the most prominent leadership roles in the global technology industry after being appointed global head of WhatsApp by Meta in June 2026.

The appointment came alongside Meta's announcement of a $900 million investment in CRED, the fintech company founded by Kunal Shah. He succeeds Will Cathcart, who had led WhatsApp since 2019.

Kunal Shah's move to Meta marks a new chapter in a career that has included building two major Indian consumer technology companies, investing in startups and developing a reputation for studying consumer behaviour.

Who is Kunal Shah?

Born and raised in Mumbai, Kunal Shah did not follow the conventional path associated with technology entrepreneurs.

He studied philosophy at Wilson College in Mumbai and later enrolled in an MBA programme, which he did not complete. His interest in philosophy and human behaviour became an important part of how he approached technology, business and consumer decision-making.

Before becoming a startup founder, Kunal Shah also worked in several jobs as a teenager. Reports have described his early work as including delivery and data-entry roles, during a period when his family was experiencing financial difficulties.

Building FreeCharge

Kunal Shah entered the startup world with FreeCharge, which he co-founded in 2010.

The company developed a platform around mobile recharges and cashback rewards and eventually became one of India's prominent consumer internet startups.

In 2015, Snapdeal acquired FreeCharge in a major Indian startup transaction. After the exit, Kunal Shah spent several years investing and studying businesses before returning to entrepreneurship.

The launch of CRED

In 2018, Kunal Shah founded CRED, initially focusing on rewarding customers for paying their credit-card bills on time.

The company's model centred on users with strong credit profiles and used rewards and memberships as part of its consumer proposition.

CRED subsequently expanded beyond its original credit-card payment offering into areas including payments, lending, insurance, commerce and wealth-related products. Business Standard reported that the company had grown to millions of members and had expanded across several financial services categories.

According to Brut's June 2026 profile, CRED had around 17 million members and processed more than 40% of India's credit-card bill payments. Those figures are company/reporting-based rather than an independently audited measure presented here.

Meta's $900 million investment in CRED

In June 2026, Meta announced a $900 million investment in CRED.

The transaction was accompanied by a leadership change: Kunal Shah stepped away from his operating role at CRED to take charge of WhatsApp globally while retaining his ownership interest in the fintech company. Miten Sampat, who had led strategy and finance at CRED, became interim CEO.

Following the transaction, reports placed CRED's valuation at approximately $4.5 billion.

Kunal Shah becomes WhatsApp's global head

Kunal Shah's appointment puts him in charge of one of the world's largest messaging platforms.

He takes over from Will Cathcart, who moved to a newly created Meta division focused on building next-generation products.

WhatsApp has expanded well beyond person-to-person messaging in recent years, with businesses, payments, commerce and other services becoming increasingly important parts of its ecosystem.

India is particularly significant for WhatsApp. TechCrunch reported that India is WhatsApp's largest market, with more than 500 million users, while the platform has more than 3 billion users globally.

Why Kunal Shah's background matters

Kunal Shah brings experience from both consumer internet and financial technology businesses.

His career has involved building products around payments, rewards, consumer behaviour and digital financial services. Those areas overlap with several of WhatsApp's expanding business opportunities, particularly in markets such as India.

Meta executives have also highlighted Kunal Shah's product-building experience and understanding of consumer technology. Business Standard reported that Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox described Kunal Shah as a respected entrepreneur and said the company was looking for someone who could understand WhatsApp's global product opportunity and the changes expected from artificial intelligence.

From Mumbai entrepreneur to global technology leader

Kunal Shah's career has moved through several distinct stages: early work experiences, FreeCharge, a major startup exit, years as an investor and entrepreneur, the creation and expansion of CRED, and finally a global leadership position at Meta.

His appointment as WhatsApp's global head also adds another chapter to the growing number of Indian entrepreneurs and executives taking senior roles at major international technology companies.

For Kunal Shah, the transition represents a move from building an Indian fintech company to overseeing the development of a global communications platform used by billions of people.
