ChatGPT Gets Virtual Try-On Feature: Users Can See Clothes on Themselves Before Buying

By Ananya Varma
OpenAI has introduced a new Virtual Try-On feature in ChatGPT that allows users to see how clothes and accessories could look on them before making a purchase.
The feature is part of a broader update to ChatGPT's shopping experience, which also introduces Favorites, allowing users to save products they find while browsing. Both features are now available on ChatGPT's web and mobile versions.
How ChatGPT's Virtual Try-On works
The new feature allows shoppers to use their own photograph to generate a preview of themselves wearing a selected product.
When an eligible clothing or accessory appears in ChatGPT's shopping results, users can select the “Try on” option and upload or take a selfie. ChatGPT then generates an image showing how the item could look on them.
Users can also upload a picture or screenshot of a clothing item directly into a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it might look on them.
The feature is powered by ChatGPT Images.
Users can save products for later
Alongside Virtual Try-On, OpenAI has introduced Favorites for shopping.
Users can bookmark products they discover and organise saved items into folders in their ChatGPT Library. This allows shoppers to return to products and previously generated try-on images later.
The update is designed to make ChatGPT more useful throughout the shopping process—from discovering products to visualising them and eventually visiting a merchant's website to purchase.
Virtual Try-On does not guarantee fit
While the feature can provide a visual preview, OpenAI cautions that generated images may not reproduce the person's appearance or the product perfectly.
The virtual image also does not guarantee the actual size or fit of the clothing.
Users are therefore advised to check the merchant's measurements, product information and return policy before purchasing.
Your reference photo can be reused
Once a user provides a reference photograph for Virtual Try-On, ChatGPT can save it for future try-ons.
OpenAI says users can manage their reference photographs through Settings → Personalization → Reference photos, where they can change or remove them.
ChatGPT expands its role in online shopping
The latest update represents a broader move by ChatGPT into AI-assisted shopping.
Instead of simply helping users search for products, ChatGPT can now help them visualise how fashion products could look on them and keep track of products they are considering.
OpenAI says product results are selected based on the user's shopping intent and other available product information. The company also states that product results are separate from advertisements and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships.
With Virtual Try-On and Favorites now available, ChatGPT is adding another visual and organisational layer to its shopping experience.
